hearing a lot about this on hear and thought i would ask you guy's first....my clutch is gone...fan turns all the time..hard to turn by hand..Napa wants $258 for one...where is there a better price..i should be ok to run it for a week this way right??? thanks guy's.........
All it does is cause you to use a little more fuel. One option I have seen done is to install a temperature switch and an electric fan in place of this. My son has done this on his truck.
I just went through replacing mine. The fans on these trucks (at least 2 clutches on mine) never truly freewheel. They won't slow down enough to be stopped with a roll of newspaper or cardboard, etc. The clutch will increase/ decrease speed depending on temperature. It will also run for a little bit when the engine is cold untill the fluid thins enough for the clutch to slip. Both the old clutch that was running too much, and the brand new one turned with some resistance after a hot shut-down. With a flick of the wrist, the blades would only move about 6"
My problem was the fan was coming on too fast most of the time. It wouldn't come all the way on and make the audible roar, but it was still coming on too much. I was seeing poor fuel economy (all the other usual culprits were checked) and I was getting poor heat from my heater on real cold mornings. Right away when I switched I was worried I miss-diagnosed the problem. Now after a week of commuting, I can tell the heater runs much better, and fuel efficiancy is up from an average of 14.4 mpg 80/20 hwy/cty over 3000 miles to one tank at 16 mpg, and this next one looking like 17+ calculating off of known and continuously verified fuel gauge readings.
I got my clutch at AutoValue/Bumper to Bumper that I have a good relationship with and get wholesale pricing. I paid $190 for a HD Hayden/Four Seasons clutch with a 5Yr./50k warr. PN 2837.
what about that new cyclone fan clutch for like $199? someone posted it on here a few weeks ago. cant remmeber when i will look for the thread though. sounded pretty interesting. you may want to consider that? who knows, mine may be bad as well, i guess i should check. does no one make a reasonably priced electric fan kit and temp switch?
after getting the chance to buy the cyclone i voted against it. I didn't like that it was either full on, or full off. I would like some twin electric fans (don't gotta cover all of the radiator, just mostly the portion directly behind the intercooler) on a variable switch, that way once i get a temperature gauge i can adjust the speed up and down.
does anyone out there make a kit for electric fans that is not $$$$$$ or has anyone here on FTE perfected ia process with part numbers that we could all replicate?
thanks guy's...sorry took so long to get back to you...I need a new one bad now...I got the fans loosen up with PB blast..now there is a lot of play on the shaft...may need to dish out the 258 now...
I took it all off, only the threaded shaft was on the water pump pulley, protruding about 1/2". I took a load of iron weighing 7400 pounds including the trailer to the junk yard with it the other day ( i can't believe i actually made it work!), and to keep temps in check i screwed the fan back on but didn't add the shroud. If you need the tools to remove and isntall it, i can lend them to you.
thanks for the offer Kris.id send ya Rep's but need to spread them out...im going to try to take the clutch out and run it that way for a couple days..its going to be down below 30 for the next few days...ill just keep an eye on the temp gauge till then...
