My brother in laws 2001 truck wouldnt start the other day, he crawled under it and taped the starter housing and it started shorting out and throwing sparks, he disconnected the batteries and took off starter and the solenoid fell apart in his hands, so he puts on new starter and now nothing, all dash lights come on but when he turns the key he says all he can hear is a click for under the hood and the starter doesnt do anything, doesnt even try to turn over any ideas?? I suspect fuse or fusible link but dont know where or if there are any fusible liks in this system
Passenger side. It's a typical looking relay. You might also try taking the relay off & cleaning the back side to make sure you don't have a bad ground there.
From the manual:
• The Engine Does Not Crank or the Relay Clicks
• Loose or corroded battery cable connections.
• Undercharged battery.
• Worn or damaged starter relay.
• Faulty starter motor ground circuit.
• Loose or corroded starter motor connections.
• Worn or damaged starter motor
The starter motor solenoid relay switch:
• controls current to the starter solenoid.
• is engaged by the ignition switch.
• connects the battery to the starter solenoid.
1. Insulator.
2. Starter motor relay trigger terminal connector.
3. Starter motor solenoid relay switch terminal nuts.
4. Engine control sensor wire and the generator wire.
5. Battery cables.
Ok just talked to him and he said it doesnt have a relay on either fender well, does a 250 have the relay or is it just the 450 and above that has them? He said he talked to a ex ford mech and he told him that the 250"s dont have that relay??????
The relay is real obvious. It is right behind the pass side battery. Two heavy gauge cables and one little one, It is late at night here and I'm doing this from memory. But if someone where to ask I could probably go out in the cold and take a photo. If the 2001 has no relay it is news to me.
The 02's don't have this relay (at least mine doesn't) but I thought the 01's did.
Follow the battery cables. If you can't find the relay, check voltage at the starter solenoid. Double check all the fuses, and check for corrosion on the grounds. Sparks are never a good thing.
Picture of starter solenoid on passenger side of my '99. As you can see it is mounted verically.
The connection referred to is the wire that goes directly to the starter. If that wire is open for some reason or did not get reconnected when starter was installed the starter will not work.
If he doesn't have the separate relay the the solenoid with internal relay will be clicking. GM doesn't use a separate relay but the solenoid will click with weak batteries or a bad ground connection.
I don't know when Ford quit using them. I don't have any 2000, or 2001 models. I've got a 99 at work that has one, and 2 02's that don't have one.
Have him check fuse 20 and 21 under the hood both 50A maxi fuses. Actually I'd check all the fuses, as he might have blown one or two. The clicking he hears may be the glow plug relay, or something else.
The click is likely the solenoid moving. The starter motor is just not turning over when power is applied to it. It's a bad starter, right out-of-the-box.
my mistake it is a 2002, but same problem he checked the fuses under the hood and called me and said there arent any fuses just black boxes that look like some kind of relay, I am going to go over to his house tomorrow and give him a hand and will report back later, any ideas before I go over there
