Hey guys, I am a regular over on the 7.3 Superduty forum so forgive me for my relative lack of knowledge of your more technologically advanced 6.0's . I have a friend that has an '06 F350 CC 4x4 longbed with about 45K on it. He just topped his coolant off last night with gold Prestone 50/50 mix. It took about a gallon of it. I looked at his owners manual and the Prestone didn't seem to meet the specs that the manual called for ( the 6.0 calls for a spec of 51 and the Prestone was 44). I told him about cavitation and what could potentially happen. I realize that your coolant system holds almost 7 gallons but I think that even a gallon of it could be detrimental and I told him so. I told him he should go with the Motorcraft Gold coolant.
Do you guys think he will be allright or should he flush? If so, what coolant other than Fords version can he use? For some reason he doesn't want to deal with the stealership around here if he can help it?
Zerex G05 is the same as the Ford coolant. I think the Gold may have a degree of tolerance for other coolant types, but I"m not sure how much. If I were him, and at that mileage, it may be a good idea to flush it both to ensure its clean (they tend to get nasty around 50k), and a consistently the proper coolant. Also, I'd be looking for the cause of loosing a gallon of coolant.
Well, just an update for you Mark, seeing as how you were nice enough to reply to my question; he was just a little below the fill mark and sitting on a bit of a hill so it wasn't as low as he thought. He put about a gallon in but only needed a little more than a quart. He did this at night (why, I have no idea). The next morning he saw that it was overfilled and broke out his Dewalt mini shop vac and took almost three quarts out. So I'm thinking that one quart mixed in with the other 26 won't do any harm. I mentioned to him that it is almost time to flush it and I think we will do both of our trucks this spring and get the right coolant in their from the get go.
Thanks again for the reply.
Peak says its compatible, but I'm not convinced. None of their products contain silicates, which I've read Ford added some back to their new mix to protect aluminum parts better. I broke down and got 4 Ga. at the dealership for $17 each. Probably could have gotten by with just 3 though. I'll be doing a coolant filter kit before too long.
I stick with John Deere coolant....If it can cool a 12.5L 600 draw bar Horsepower tractor, its good enough for my trucks!! If you have a John Deere dealer near by you could try some....
