Ok I inspected my turbo the other day. I followed the ford tech article that was posted in here a few days ago.
The wheel looks good. Clean true leading edges. No chips or bends.
I pulled in and out on the nut and there is no play there.
The wheel will spin freely and not touch the housing.
The wheel has what appears to be the normal dark coloration like in the picture from the tech article.
With the wheel at rest, if I side load the nut/shaft I can get the edge of the wheel to just touch the housing. Is this a sign that the bearing is on its way out? This is a stock turbo with 115,000 miles.
I want to make sure It has some life left in it before I buy an ATS housing to cure some new surge since I just install a tuner. I do not want to trash a new housing in a short period over the bearing.
So do I get a new Garrett BB turbo? Buy a Rebuilt stock and an ATS housing?
or just an ATS housing and keep an eye on things then buy a BB turbo and sell the housing? Have mine rebuilt and install a housing?
the side to side should not be more then .001 to .002 of play..when truck is running oil will fill that void..if was me and i had the cash..id get the BB now..if not.. you can get away with just the housing..as for the rebuild..depends on the amount of play you have and what the milage is..and again how much cash you got on hand..

Yep, wheel should not contact the housing at all. Time for a rebuild or a new turbo.
