It is obviously 4 wheel related...

Any thoughts?...

I had the same thing happen when I went to NJ, I was told to put it in Neutral. until you hear, feel the release.

you only need to go into neutral when shifting in and out of 4 wheel low. 2wd to 4hi is (supposed to be lol) on the fly shift while driving.

Joe,
if the whining has stopped, the hubs probably finally unlocked, but just to be sure, you can try to spin the stub shafts at the knuckles, and that'll tell you for sure

the hubs don't unlock until you stop, sometimes you have to back up.

Thanks guys...I 'normally' do back up...just habit from the Exploder hubs...I just feel better doing it I guess...I was able to back up when I got to work...so I'm hoping all is well...

I have a 2000 Ex and my hub switches won't turn and the lettering/graphicsthat tell me if they are in auto or locked is warn off, so I don't know what possition it's in right now. I mean, they will not turn. i tried to persuase with some channel locks, but I didn't want to break them.

From in the cab, i put my Ex in 4x4 high (it's electronic). It says it's in 4wheel, but only my rear wheels spin. If I give it gas and the rears slip too much, I feel a slam, for an instant, it feels as though the fronts wheels are engaging and then disengaging.....sort of like my full time AWD Explorer use to do in 4X4 auto did.

Do I need to pull my hubs apart and where is the best place to get a service manual so I can see what i need to do to get the job done? Could these hubs be stuck in locked mode. I'm guessing my 4 wheel should work, since they are either auto or locked....could my problem be my hubs and something else?

The hubs are vacuum controlled...perhaps your vac lines need replaced?...don't know...
