4x4 HUB question
This morning my development streets were pretty icy...so I engage 4 wheel...no problem...a few seconds and light comes on dash...I can tell all is locked up with the front wheels pulling.
I get to the main drag and disengage 4 wheel...I start to hear this low pitch whine...I'm thinking the radio...so I turn that off...but it is still there.
I'm going maybe 30mph so I re-engage 4 wheel but the indicator pops on IMMEDIATELY...
I dis-engage 4 wheel and continue to hear it. I come to a light and start to slow...the whine pitch is speed dependent...
I couldn't back up as there was traffic behind ... but I'm probably used to my old '92 Exploder I had where you had to back up to 'unlock' the auto hubs...
By the time I got to work (2.5 more miles)...the noise had completely stopped...
It is obviously 4 wheel related...
Any thoughts?...
joe.

Joe,
if the whining has stopped, the hubs probably finally unlocked, but just to be sure, you can try to spin the stub shafts at the knuckles, and that'll tell you for sure
Thanks again!
From in the cab, i put my Ex in 4x4 high (it's electronic). It says it's in 4wheel, but only my rear wheels spin. If I give it gas and the rears slip too much, I feel a slam, for an instant, it feels as though the fronts wheels are engaging and then disengaging.....sort of like my full time AWD Explorer use to do in 4X4 auto did.
Do I need to pull my hubs apart and where is the best place to get a service manual so I can see what i need to do to get the job done? Could these hubs be stuck in locked mode. I'm guessing my 4 wheel should work, since they are either auto or locked....could my problem be my hubs and something else?

The hubs are vacuum controlled...perhaps your vac lines need replaced?...don't know...
GOOD LUCK!
