My brother called me today and asked if I heard that 2008 is the last year of the powerstroke. He said that he heard that international is taking is back to produce a pickup again. Is this true and if so does this mean that ford is going to take the cummins from dodge?? The reason I ask this is that I heard that ford owns cummins.
Get your flack jacket on . Ford doesnt own cummins. The 6.4L will run unitl atleast 2010 and after that it is said that Ford will have a 6.7L V-8 in house diesel ready for the super duty.
Thanks guys I wasn't sure about the cummins thing. Hopefully the in house diesel is as good or better than the powerstroke. but of course it is FORD so you can't go wrong either way.
The 'Powerstroke' name will continue. Ford is breaking all ties with International. The 6.4L Powerstroke replacement will be a Peugeot design built by Ford. International will stop supplying Ford with the F-650, 750 and LCF commercial trucks in September '09. International has bought GM's medium/heavy truck (Topkick and Kodiak) designs and will produce them for GM. GM is working on a new medium duty model, reported to be like the Super Duty F-450 pickup. International might get their own version of this truck too.
That kinda sucks that they will change motors that quick. That doesnt give techs very much time to learn these new motors. Then they got to go learn about the newer one. But hay, maybe severing the ties with Int. and if ford can produce a good reliable diesel then the powerstroke will purley dominate the light duty truck market. All I have to say is that they better not go with that stinkin IFS in the future, like GM did.
I am not feeling the fact of ford building there own diesel. I can only hope there gonna buy the rights of the current engine from international similar to what gm did with the duramax.
I have never been impressed with fords in house diesel engines in the medium duty lines in the past.

Why do people keep saying "ford owns cummins" ... no, not true - in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.
As LouisvilleJoe stated, one of the new motors is Peugeot Citroen, I think it is dubbed the 4.4 Lion V8. 350hp/500ftlb
Diesel Power said potential platforms were the Expy, Explorer and F150. Also maybe a base motor for Superduty.
Okay I am not sure of the whole truth or not but I would life to state that my good friend is a diesel mechanic and he did say that ford owns the rights to the cummins engine. Not htat they own the engine just the rights. He did say that they were told last fall that ford had no intention on using the cummins in their trucks. He was told that only time will tell how long ford will use international for the diesel motor, since they had alot of problems with the 6.0.He said they told them that ford is looking at using CAT to build their motors as a backup for international. My understanding is that ford already uses CAT motors in their large trucks. This is all something to ponder on as I am not stating facts just what a diesel tech was told from a training course.
