stewpid question; cylinder #,s

Gang,

Being from the gm side of things, I'm familiar with cylinders 1,3,5,7 being on the driver side of the engine and 2,4,6,8 being on the passenger side.

Got my 460 down to the rods last night to find 1,2,3,4 on the driver side and 5,6,7,8 on the passenger side (I guess somebody had worked on it before and taken a metal stamp to the rod caps?). Are the markings correct, or did they just mark it incorrectly?....

Easy question...

Thanks for all your help guys,
Mark

Aha!! So Ford uses a different cylinder numbering scheme than GM, eh? Thanks for your reply, whomrig. It'll be helpful to know when the time comes to set timing....the #1 is always helpful to find!!

Regards,
Mark

Dont feel bad. My buddy has a airboat with a 454 gm on it, and he wanted me to time the engine for him. I wired it as I normally would, except the dist was in the rear and the firing order was different. I couldnt' get the thing to do anything but backfire....then I realized that one side is 1357 the other is 2468! oh, yea, #1 is on the opposite side too!

As for the numbers being stamped on the rods and main caps, Ford does that from the factory (just another benifit to owning a Ford). I know Chevy doesn't and if you don't pay attention you can hurt yourself really quick.

Thanks guys for all your input. I think I have it down pat, now. Indeed, that is why I had to buy a stamped number set for my Rat motors - gm doesn't not stamp anything. I think I'm beginning to like Ford :-)).

Mark,
1234 are on the passengers side and 5678 are on the drivers side. The numbers are on the intake runners next to the valve cover.

Dennis - thanks; I understand now. It's great Ford marks their stuff - GM could learn a few things from them.

laptop,
You'll also have to remember the cylinder numbering scheme and the firing order when you set the lash on your valves, provided your using adjustable rockers. I've got a couple of methods that allow you to do this by only rotating through the firing order one time.

No Sir. Ford was not different. Henry built the first car. Ch#$y had to be different. The boys in blue were first on the block. No pun intended. ;-)
