Not gonna save any money that way. I ain't never seen a paint store that'll sell you just enough paint to spray your project. If you buy a quart like tampa898 said you'll have lots left over.
Are you trying to save the matched paint for something special? Why don't you just paint the whole thing with what you've got? By the time you mix it you'll have more than enough to cover the entire tailgate if you don't spray it all over the shop.
Will a pint cover the whole tailgate? I already have a pint of matched paint and i wasnt sure if that would cover the whole tailgate. So i figured i use cheap autozone paint to spray the back half and sides then spray the front with the matched paint. What im trying to avoid is ording more matched paint. The paint/clear coat has already cost me more then the tailgate itself i was just tring to do the job on the cheap a shop told me 300$$ for the whole job
I've painted an entire fill-size pickup, 3 coats inside and out- with just less than a gallon. I'm pretty sure you can put 2 coats on a tailgate with a pint. Is it metallic?
Mix ratio depends on the kind of paint. I'd plan on 3 coats for metallic. Spray side-to-side first coat, let it tack up and spray top-to-bottom second coat, and even everything out with the final coat to get rid of any zebra stripes. If you're scared of running out cut it down to 2 coats on the inside that's gonna get covered with bedliner.
