I am looking at a new/untitled 2015 F-350 but the tailgate has been stolen while on the lot. The dealership has a replacement tailgate that they say came pre-painted from Ford. An acquaintance from another Ford dealership tells me they don't come painted and that the dealership isn't being truthful.
Does anyone know if tailgates come pre-painted from Ford? I'm concerned about buying a truck that has a tailgate paint job that may not age with the other parts of the truck.
Unless a Ford rep can validate, I would be very surprised if Ford sells pre-painted tailgates. There are eBay sellers of pre-painted body parts (bumpers and fenders, from what I have seen), and I'd suspect it was from one of them. Ask the dealer to show you the purchase order.
The dealer could have swiped the tailgate off another truck that was being purchased with some option that deleted it. I would just inspect it carefully for fit and finish and accept it if it looks right. Its only a tailgate. They do tend to take a beating over the years anyway.
The salesman already told us that it was ordered rather than swapped. We suggested swapping but they don't have another in the same color on the lot.
More than anything it's the lack of honesty. It's a credibility issue if what they said is not true and I won't reward them with my business if that's the case. The 'say whatever you have to say in order to get the sale' mentality doesn't sit well with me.
When you're spending this much on a new vehicle it needs to be pretty close to perfect when you take it off the lot.
