I have a (new to me) '94 IDI Turbo F350. I'm in South Carolina and it is not cold, about 45 degrees at night. If block heater is plugged in the truck starts easily, if not plugged in it it really tough to start. One mechanic says I should add a fuel lift pump - I am thinking that I have GP problem. Have already replace the GP relay but that did not seem to do any good. Am planning to test GP's for resistance and voltage. Any other suggestions?
If there is an old post I should read feel free to point in the right direction, I've searched a bit but then decided to post this.
does the truck smooth out running after it warms up after a no block heater start? if if does, it may not be more than an air intrusion problem in the return lines. are they still gray? if so probably original and ready for replacement. might look at that before going to the expense of a lift pump.

It does seem to smooth out right away and runs great. Engine was rebuilt but no idea if they replaced fuel return lines, will look closer tomorrow. Also, where can I find Beru GP's for this truck - I am really suspicious of the GP's that the previous owner would have used - especially after seeing how the trany rebuild was botched up.
Just another thought for you,
I have replaced the plastic fuel lines in the frame rail "feed and return" on both my deisels and it made a huge difference in how both of them started.
I found that 4 of the GP's were dead, all Autolite - the 4 good ones are all Beru - so I added in 4 more Beru's. She wants to start better now but still won't catch, she turns over, tries to catch but does not. Also, Wait To Start light still only lights for a few seconds but GP relay continues to tick for about 30 seconds before stopping. Do I wait until ticking stops before turning the engine over? What's next to check and how do I test? GP relay is new, but not the controller.
try cycling the key a few times as the wait to start light goes ou turn the key off and then back on afew times then try to start it sounds like your gp controller isn't runing the plugs long enough. How long dose the light stay on? Also may be air intrusion still looking for my air intrusion problem truck runs rough when i start it after sitting over night.
if it just when you turn it over . my truck did that after i disconnected the cold start . might have gone out. it advances timing for cold starts and does anyone else know if it can cause airleaks??
What i'm saying is the cold start Revs the motor to run smoothly to give more fuel and also changes timing to deal with your cold block. after the blocks warm it's not needed.
when i removed my cold start plug(after it started to arc from a melted connection) i noticed rough starts in the morning until it started warming up.
