Well I know powerstrokes are real finicky with bio so not so sure it would be a good idea in them. But the old IDIs will run on just about anything even seen them run on striat vegie oil right out of the container.
trans fluid hydro fluid and used oil is not bio it's much better grade of oil. anybody running anything besides diesel in their newer trucks out there??
My brother works at freightliner and he says that when he replaces the fuel filter, he fills them with oil and they fire right up. Just shows that even the newest stuff can run on anything. As long as it is filtered I don't see ANY problem.. I was going to run that fluid through mine and see how long it took for the fuel filter to clog. Anything that is smaller than the fuel filter pores will go right through the IP and injectors without clogging them. If the fuel needed to be completely pure then we would have a dual filter type deal from the factory. I have actually filled up at diesel stations and seen crap going into my 5 gallon tank (for tractor)..
yeah the quality of fule here in Nevada is horrible when I went back to Cali for cristmass I got insanly better milage on the way back. As for the oil in the fillter If I'm too far away from the lube pit where we have fule on tap I just get a bottle of ATF to fill the filter, not sure I'd want to run a HEUI system on it all the time though injectors are more dellicate and very expensive, would rather let some one els do the r&d on that one befor I would try it. Might start useing it in my IDI though.
when i worked at ryder systems in the 80s, the yellow rental truck, yellow car haulers and whatever else they were into, they started a program when the truck had an oil change they would pump it thru a filter then straight into the fuel tank. no problems.
i also saw the mechs fill the fuel filters with motor oil right out of the hose. they said it wouldnt hurt anything and it saved them from haveing to stick their arms down into the tank to fill the filters.
but if you are stopped for a fuel check the fuel will be black and hide the "tax dye"
i asked what they would do if it was black and the officer said they would keep a sample and as long as the underlying fuel was legal they wouldnt do anything
i figure as long as the used oil is filtered down to the 5-10 microns it would pass the injector pump and injectors no problem
i just wonder what happens when the metals in suspension go into the cylinder at extreme temps
at the price of fuel though, if it shortened the life of the motor 1/3 or 1/4 and you were running used FREE motor oil it probably would still pay for itself a few times
just my thoughts
gt
run a magnet through the oil before and after you filter. what it doesn't get want hurt anything. i'm not a scientist but i believe the small amount of any metals if any would probably burns off. if your getting your oil from people that change their oil every 3000 miles it looks almost as good as it did when they poured it in. i don't run it straight but almost. 204000 miles on a 7.3 idi. 90 model and still going strong on mostly free fuel but don't tell anybody.
Yeah you have to filter it pretty good for stuff like that, but I don't worry about it because there is the truck fuel filter which should get everything.
