I got a 1968 big block. I think it is either a 460 or a 429. How do I know for sure? I am not sure what it came out of, but I do have a picture of this car, if anyone wants to see it.
There appears to be a power steering pump mounted on the front of the block, between the harmonic balancer and the block. Hmm.
The casting on the heads reads C8VE E
The firing order on the intake goes 15426378
The sticker on the valve cover goes C8AE-9C485D
The idle rpm is 550 and the timing 10 btdc.
I am trying to use it to replace a badly worn 1977 460.
Can anyone identify from this, or do I need to post pics?
The casting number that is on the valve cover sticker reads C8AE. This says that this engine, if still original & duplicats what the sticker says, was produced in 1968 and was intended for a full-size Ford or even a Mercury (LTD, Mercury Marquis & etc). Generally the 460 was installed in Lincolns and the 429's were installed in the full-sized Fords & Mercury's during the late 60's and in the early 70's. There are alot vehicles out there that contradict this fact like special order cars and such. If I were a betting man I would have to lean toward this engine in being a 429.
LAST EDITED ON 23-Sep-01 AT 09:36 PM (EST)[p]If you have a picture of the car, that should be easy to ID. Lincoln had the shaft mounted pump for 68/69 460. T-Bird and Mercury 429 I don't think did, but could be wrong there.
I have one of those crazy looking power steering pumps, they used a different timing cover also. It came off a '68 429 that was installed in a T-bird, the C-6 trans uses a different shaped case also.
Sit tight while I get them up and going. I will u/l them to my photopoint site, and then link to there.
The motor did come from a Lincoln Mark 3. I know because I stole the rear end from it. It was a 9", 31 spline. 2.8 gears.
We got the motor pulled and swapped from the car to the F250. Finding the right pilot bearing was hard, but we did get it done. I am using the four speed and NP205 which came from the 351 in the F250. NP435? T18? Whatever it is, it has a very LOW 1st gear.
