All I hear is that the e4od is crap basically. Is the tranny really that weak or is it weak compared to the zf5. Or is it the overdrive that is weak? Because My tranny feels great until the overdrive when it feels like the engine is overtorqueing the tranny. My overdrive engages at 35 mph and is only running a little over a 1000 rpm. is the overdrive engageing too early???
The strength of the E4OD depends largely on the type of build, and the year if its from factory. If its from 1989, and its a factory build, I would call it weak, if its 1995 or newer, I would call it adequate. By 1997 ford made a long list of internal upgrades that, in my opinion at least, make it a little stronger than the ZF5, although not all trannies of that year had all the upgrades.
1000 RPM is a bit low, I can set mine up to do that if I want, but its not a good idea especially if you are going up hill or are loaded. are the other upshifts happening that early as well? Could be an FILP sensor bad, or not adjusted properly. Are the shifts soft as well?
I had a 1997 PSD and it would shift into O/D at 35 mph as well unless you were mashing on the gas a little harder. I liked it because it kept my rpms down. However alot of times I would give it just enough gas that it would not shift until I was at 40 or 45 mph. I loved that tranny. I have an 05 f350 now and really hate the way the tranny works. It will down shift on the littlest hill when pulling even a small trailer. Also does it in overpasses in town when pulling my welding trailer. It might weigh a thousand pounds or a little more. My old 97 would not downshift unless you had a heavy trailer on and if you were running 70 it would not downshift until you got pulled down to about 65 mph. I dont care for this new torqueshift tranny at all and nearly took the pickup back after having it a week because I hated how it would not hold its gears. Finally learned in the end that its doing exactly what its supposed to. I still dont like it but I am slowly learning how to manipulate the throttle to make it shift when and how I want it to and to try and keep it in the gear I want it in. It does no good to shift into overdrive at the bottom of a hill when you are about to pull an even bigger hill. I now know I should have bought a standard or a chevy. That allison tranny works very well and holds its gears very well. But chevy's are overpriced and I really like my ford better, just not the tranny. (Sorry guys I meant to make a simple comment about my 97 but I just had to vent.)
