The 351m and the 400 have the same bellhousing pattern, yeah. the 351c uses the small block pattern.

Tried to post this earlier, not showing up on my comp...

No. The FE's have a round bell housing bolt pattern. The 335 series can have 2 different bell housing bolt patterns. Unless you find a really rare 400.... The 351M and 400 share with the 429/460 and the 351c shares with the 351w and the 302 and the 289 and other "small fords". Not sure about bell housing interchange with inline ford engines.

They're a weird engine, as well as the 351m. The only reason they're considered small blocks is because of their external dimensions are similar to small blocks....but everything else about them is big block.

I actually went to summit racing hq one day and ordered a bunch of parts for my 400, and i told the guy behind the counter it was all for a 400 ford small block, and blew the guy's mind. He kept saying that ford never made a 400 small block, and he thought i was talking about some ultra-rare engine or something, and it took about 4 people and 5 minutes of conversation before we got it cleared up that i was talking about the regular old ford 400, apparently everyone at summit consideres them big blocks.

What other bell housing does this rare 400 have? For future reference the 302, 289 "small fords" bell housings do interchange with the 300 six. Thanks for answering my question.

I remember reading on the net that there was a ford 400 that used the same bellhousing pattern as the 351c did, but there was only a couple of them ever made.

I believe the "rare" bellhousing 400 was, as stated above, the 400 with the small ford bellhousing pattern. I believe it was found in VERY FEW 72 or 73 rancheros that had a 400 in them.

Thanks for the info on the inline 6's being interchangable with the small ford bellhousing..That was always my inclination, but i never knew for sure.

It doesn't make sense to refer to any Ford engine as a small block or a big block because some characteristics of each Ford engine can conform to one person's definition of a small block, whereas another characteristic conforms to another person's definition of a big block. "400 small block" makes no sense because there is only one 400 that Ford ever made, except for a few rare FMX-mated blocks. There is no "400 big block" and no "400 small block." If you say "400" then that is all you need to know. There is no "351 small block" versus a "351 big block" - just 351C, 351W, and 351M. Small block \ big block is a Chevy thing and makes no sense on Ford because what one guy considers a small block, another guy considers a big block.

As for the 400, there was an option on '73 full-size Fords (LTD, Galaxie) for Cruise-O-Matic transmission with a 400 engine. These are cast with what is often referred to as the "small block" bell-housing pattern that bolts to a 289, 302, 351W, etc. These are very rare but they are out there. Most 400's are cast to accept what is commonly referred to as the "big block" bell-housing - the same pattern that accepts a 429, 460, and a 351M. I was very curious when I got my '73 Galaxie to see if it had the rare 400 block, until I crawled underneath to find a good old C6 transmission underneath. No rare block for me.

Also, it is my understanding that Ford inline 6's are the "small block" pattern. I have a 300 in a '79 pickup bolted to a C6 with a "small block" bellhousing.

I used to have a camaro with a chevy 350 in it, i cant count how many times i'd tell someone what the engine size was and they'd ask "Oh, big block or small block?"

its pretty alike and a c4 from a 6l engine can be used on any v8 with small block bellhouse a bit loose due to the fact that 2 of the bolts wont match because the pattern changes in the top part of the bellhousing, I took a c4 from a 6l 80´mustang and to my tang with a 302 and had that inconvinient....
