to tear into your coolant filters to see what was left behind. Got mine off today and I'm really curious to see how much junk was left behind.

I just changed my coolant filter today after 10,000 miles and just poured the coolant into a quart jar. About 2 tablespoons of grit came out of the filter this way. My son has the digital camera, so I will wait a few days (when he returns ffrom a trip) to take a picture and post. It was a lot of material.

I installed the coolant filter at 3000 miles and now have 25,000 miles on the truck. This is the third filter change in 22,000 miles. I wrote down in my mileage log book that a previuous post on FTE suggested that the filter be changed at 5000 mile intervals for 3 times and then once a year thereafter. This sounds about right even though I waited a bit longer and changed the last two at about 9,000 miles.

I add 1.5 pints back into the degass reservoir every time I change the filter.

I laid the filter on it's side and cut around the filter body just under the seam with a hacksaw.

I did the same thing except I used a hand held band saw with filter in a vice. I would say a sawzall would do a good job also. My truck only has 7300K and I purchased the Dieselsite Coolant filter at about 4700k and I changed it at about 5700k and was really surprised at all the grit that was in that filter in only a 1000k.
