what flywheels fit a 460? I need a flywheel for a 1970 460. Other than some rare cj piece is there anything i could use. I had read one time here that a 390 flywheel fits? Is this true?Late model 460 flywheels don't work becouse of diffent balancing. Could i just knock the wieght off and use it. what about ring gear and starter. This is all going into a 79 4x4 with a 4spd and ex 400m.thanks
you can use a 390 flywheel but the starter will not engage properly in the past I have slotted the starter hole so it will fit and ride in the right spot
I am using 360 flywheels on two of my trucks now and I have never had any starter problems. How are you slotting the holes to move the starter? Just the lower hole to move it closer to the flywheel?
Actually I had to slot it to move the starter out because the fly wheel I used was as little bigger I can't remember the tooth count it was a lone time ago
I used a 360 clutch that is 11" and didn't have any problems.A 400 bellhousing isn't deep enough to use a 12",the clutch arm will hit the pressure plate. The flywheel is a 1/2" farther from the block on a 460 than 400.What type of clutch did your 400 have,a long or diaphram?

I am not sure but it is full of oil, bad rear seal. Why does it matter its a 12" clutch anyway isn't. I found a 360 flywheel, so what clutch do I pick up tommorrow. Thanks greenhighboy
It makes a BIG difference what clutch it has!Ford used two different bellhousings on the 400, one for each type of clutch. If it had a diaphram pressure plate, the bellhousing is not as deep as the one used with the long style pressure plate. You need the one for the long style pressure plate to use a 360 pressure plate. The part number for the right bellhousing is D7TA 7505 AD.

The 390 clutch is a long style and the 400 is a diaphram style. Can I use the 400 clutch on the 390 flywheel. This should give me enough clearance right. Or will it not fit in the 351-400 bellhouseing. Does it have to be the 400 long style bellhouseing. Can I grind the inside of the other bell to fit?
I had the same thing on my '77.I had a 400 diaphram bellhousing and used a 360 flywheel and the 400 diaphram clutch and it works great. The flywheel I used had the holes drilled in it for the pressure plate but they weren't threaded. The holes were drilled the correct size to tap 7/16" threads,so that is what I did. Then I had to drill the bolt holes in the pressure plate also big enough for 7/16" bolts. There isn't enough room for a hex head bolt so I used 7/16" allen head bolts 1" long with lock washers also. This is the best feeling clutch I have in my trucks, the other two have 12" longs in them, the diapham clutch is much smoother.I hope this will work for you too,its the only way I know to use what you have and still have the clutch and starter work like they should.

I forgot something in my last post. You need to use different flywheel bolts also. The springs in the hub of the clutch disc hit the heads of the stock flywheel bolts. You can get some at the auto parts store that have a thinner head for about$6.I had to do this on both 360 flywheels I used. You may have to ask for bolts for a BB Chevy.
