I think Orangebyke makes a good point. I love my X but it is getting hard to put up with the "what's it in the shop for now" comments. I should not be sitting here hoping that "when the heads finally go bad" it is still under warranty. This is the first vehicle I've ever had that I've even thought about the heads.....btw I've already been down the injector, tranny, numerous flashes, couple of replaced gaskets and now it seems EGR Cooler and tranny shift sensor (see other post) route. I will add though that my Ford dealer here in Ft. Wayne, Indiana has - thus far - been great to work with.
But for the most part it does hold true. no tuner does for the most part = happy head gaskets.
All you have to do is make a little tally sheet and start reading the threads. Tex hasn't had head gasket trouble so he gets a little sensative about hearing it. But just read the threads and keep count with how many have had head gasket problems, then read thier sig block and ussually the common denominator is a tuner.

Where have you been. I have had to have my passenger heads machined .003, so I have had head problems. Bean can vouch for that as he did my head work. This is the 3rd time that you have said things that are blatantly wrong about me. Getting a little tiring(and I am getting a little sensitive about that(you saying wrong things about me, not about the head issues(just so you won't misquote me again)). Had you read the majority of head threads that have appeared in the various diesel forums here lately, you would have known known. Also even if what you had said above was correct, it doesn't logically follow that what I said was wrong based on rather or not I had head problems. Sure tuners can create head problems, but head problems could also be from factory and the person never had used a tuner and if they don't use their trucks for work and have loads on them, they may never know til later. Or they could have had head problems from the factory, used a tuner, which all the tuner did was expose the problem, but they blame the tuner because of a time relationship of having used the tuner and then head problems(which doesn't logically follow either without more evidence, which I am willing to bet more then likely that is the best evidence that people have when they post head problems associated with using a tuner on here). That is what happened to me, used bullydog found out a had headgasket problems, does that mean that bullydog caused it, it could have do I know for certain --- no, but more people then not would still blame the bullydog for it even lacking more definative proof. So even tallying the threads is suspect unless you know they varified that the tuner did in fact cause the problem rather then just expose it.

To the thread; I am actually really happy I got my truck when I did. I think that the 99-07 Superduties are better then the 08+ ones due to upcoming reg crunches; more mod friendly; better mpg etc... Not to mention that I really like the 6.0L.
as far as the tuner coming into play, i agree with TEX when he states that their is no way to tell if it the hg prolem was there before. i had my icp sensor replaced under warranty , before i went to the dealership, i called and discussed with the writer weather they had seen this problem on 6.0s without tuners and he told me it was happening either with or without. when i showed up they started giving me flack about mine. i quickly threw that guy under the bus to the manager and the agreeed to fix if and also agreed that it would have happened even if i didnt have the tuner.
i realy dont think the tuner is as much a problem as a dealer scapegoat to get out of fixing a truck under warranty,
i think you're absolutely right i think the addition of a tuner doesnt cause the prob just speeds up process mayb or brings the problem out to some extent
