Ok I need info... Looking for a good dis. for my truck. All I can find is either a stock one or a Mallory for around $400. Are there any other distibs made for a 300 inline. and what is the diference between a new stock and a mallory? Is it worth spending that much money?
Kevin
If i'm not mistaken there is a DUI ignition for the 300. I think its called Davis Unified Ignition. Its a pretty neat looking setup, let me see if i can find you a link. http://www.performancedistributors.com/forddui.htm
It seems that this distributor is going to be pretty pricey...but it is out there.
Dura-Spark II Electronic Ignition distributor & it runs about the same as the Mallory.
By-the-by, the proper designation for our Inline 6 engines is, "I-6", as "L-6" is the proper designation for a Flathead 6.
Just thought you'd wish to know.

OK I looked for the dura spark II dist. and couldnt find one. So far the only options I have is order a Mallory for a little over $300 or buy a reman cardone dist for about $50 with a lifetime warranty. So, what differences would there be in performance between the two. I put a offy intake and a 390CFM Holley on my engine and I am thinking about putting a high torque cam in it. Do I really need the mallory????

You really shouldn't need a hi-po distributor for that engine. A good hot coil, and a factory Duraspark II distributor will do you fine. The DS-II units are fairly reliable, as i've never had any trouble out of the one in my big six.
I don't know how the mallory is, but I just replaced the DS-II in my '81 from Autozone. They only sell remans but they were only around $50 and it's ran great.
I will say the first one I got was bad (the shaft bearings went out within 3000 miles) and the wobble chewed up the cap and rotor. However, they gave me all three under warranty without any questions asked and I swapped it out in the parking lot in 20 minutes. Of course, that could happen with a brand new one.
If you're worried about performance, just question whether the $300 price difference is worth it when most say it isn't that noticeable, and what else could you put that $300 towards?
Ok I just bought a reman. distributer from autozone, $45.99 + tax with a lifetime warranty. A new Duralast wire set with lifetime warranty. A new Duralast cap and rotor. A Autotune distributer cap adapter. And a set of Autolite Platinum plugs. I will let you know how it goes. I will install tomorrow and post some pics. I hope it will help.

Ok installed dist. last night. The weather is kinda crappy here today so I cannot work on it right now. I set my timing to 6* before TDC. It bogs down bad when I bury the throttle. Other than that it idles good.
I'd try bumping the initial timing up a touch. It may call for 6 BTDC in the book, but most of these engines like a little more initial timing than what the book calls for.
Also, i would check the vacuum line going from the dizzy to your carb. It sounds to me that it isn't advancing as you apply more throttle. Try swapping that vacuum line around. If you have it hooked up to the carb now, try hooking it up to direct manifold vacuum.
Good that you got it going, even if it is only half way.
Ok will blocking off the dist. hookup on the carb affect it? I am assuming you said to run line from either intake manifold or carb spacer to dist. and cap off dist hookup on the carb. I m going to try advaning the timing also. Plus I am changing my 60000 volt coil to a MSD Blaster II coil I think it runs around 42000 volts. Does it really matter about the voltage???
