Mallory Distributor

Any tips installing a Mallory distributor in my 64' 292 w/3spd? I got it on a trade and would like to use it. My motor is stock xcpt for headers.

I can't believe this post is almost a month old without any replies.

Did you get a Unilite dist.? I have noticed one on a website, but I really didn't think anybody made a drop-in replacement for the older Y blocks with the loadomatic.

I've never had mine out, but I've read where the 54 - 56 where different from the 57+. The drive gear is different and the oil pump drive is different. I can't remember all the details. Hopefully someone will pipe up here any day now!

The only year with a different drive gear and oil pump is the '54, all else are the same. Since he stated he had a '64 292 that is not an issue.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Mallory distributor and I suspect others are not either, that's why you haven't got a response. Maybe try asking on the Y-Block Social Group on the H.A.M.B.

I'm running the mallory Unilite Dist in my 56 f100. The part # is 8383 and its a full mechanical distributor with no vac advance. I dont "know" anything else about the unit. Works fine as it was a new off the shelf unit.

Should fit in the 64 with no problems.

Makes sense. This 239 is really an orphan!

flipklos, how do I install this thing? Can I use the stock coil? There is a plug coming off the distrutor and not sure what to plug it into.

Red is your positive wire that goes to the + on the coil.
Green goes to the - side of the coil.
Brown is a chassis ground.

Either lop off the plug on the dizzy and wire it yourself or buy a plug that fits.
A stock coil will work, a mild performance coil would allow bigger spark gaps however.

Great! sounds easy enough. How do you determine the correct gap with a performance coil?

I use .045. Some guys go bigger some smaller. Try the .045 if you are not getting any miss you can try bigger. If it is missing and losing power go smaller.

Over the last year or so Ted Eaton has been doing MANY dyno tests using the same 312 engine, with a huge number of variables to see what works best. Along the way he has found that smaller spark plug gaps even coupled with electronic ignitions yield higher horsepower. Counterintuitive, but hard to argue. So .035-.040 based upon his evidence.

And for a street engine, C heads perform nicely, especially in a 292, FYI.
