Foreign Object on my Oil plug

When I my wife had the truck serviced, the guy found two small objects stuck to my oil plug as shown in the picture. They appear as if they are from the same origin. My first thought was that they had broken off of a valve, because they seem to have a "cup" to them. The outer radius from each of the pieces is machined, and the inner edge as well as the ends of each piece are jagged where they broke off of something.

My wife is not too mechanically inclined, and I got to thinking that maybe it was just a washer around the oil plug that broke. However, the material seems really hard, and it appears to be broken on the inner radius and ends. The last thing that I did was install the 38r and regulated return. I did gut my turbo pedestal, but I don't have any idea how these pieces would come from there. The truck seems to run fine, and there is not any oil consumption to speak of. I have noticed a slight knock ever since I installed the reg return (I mean slight) that sounds like the ole' #8 injector complaining about the reg return providing too much fuel.

Anyways, anyone recognize these pieces?

Didn't we just a have a thread a few months back similar to this?? I believe it was determined that it was part of a failing turbo. Did you replace the turbo because it was on its way out, or was it just an upgrade?

The big copper thing is a penny -- how'd that get in there??

Turbo was just an upgrade...the last turbo did not "appear" to be on its way out.

I think I'll contact the Navistar engineering department on the penny.

Possible that a piece dropped down in there when you were working on it. It doesn't look like something "that important". If it's all working okay, I'd just keep an eye & ear on things.

Ive racked my brain for the night and i cannot come up with anything. I'll go look in my spare parts tomorrow and see if i can find anything. Put the bottom edge of the right piece to the bottom edge of the left piece, and see if they match? Does the penny fit inside that "cup" that the two pieces make? It would be helpful :0

I think they go together, but when I put the edges together so that they appear to fit together, the "cup" part does not match. If they do fit together the way I think they to, probably they were originally "flat", and were deformed when they failed. Also, when they are together, the outer radius is really close to the radius of the penny.

Go by and pick up a new drain plug with washer, and compare just to be sure. If the old washer was seated against the pan, and had cracked when the plug was pulled the magnetic force may have just attracted those pieces.

That's why mine does not get serviced by anyone but me, or with me watching whatever is going on. No telling where that really came from. Where was it serviced at? I sure don't recognize that part, while that doesn't mean anything, I have been looking at the top end of the head a lot lately.

Shouldn't be a steel washer though -- supposed to be copper. But stranger things have happened... It would be a load off if it's just the drain plug washer....

JTHarvey found pieces of metal in his oil pan. Maybe he will chime in with an opinion soon.

my first thought was a grade 8 washer about 3/8" but that would not be radioused even broken
the next thought would be a steel sleeve or hollow shaft with a snap ring land, but never having a PSD torn down would have no idea if such a thing would exist
