I have a 2004 F150 4x4 XLT Supercab with the 5.4L 3V engine. I have 90,000 miles on it and have had no problems. I have done all of the normal scheduled maintenance. The only problem (or annoyance) I have is the engine ticking, which I have diagnosed to be the cam phasers. For those of you who have had it done, about how much did it cost? I would like to get a feel for the amount before I get an estimate from the dealer's service department. Thank you.
Here is my ordeal hope yours doesnt cause you to drink
I have my truck sitting at a ford dealership being told its going to cost me 6270.00 to fix some kind of cam head issue. I had rough idle and was told it was these two round parts I think the cam phasers. They said that I should also have the lifters changed, ok. I have a 2004 fx4 f150 with 76000 miles. This was supposed to cost 1600.00 until today where the head issues came up. This is my 2nd ford truck that had problems well under 100,000 miles. I spent nearly 4,000.00 in work on my ranger that was never fixed. I sold the damn thing and figured one more ford the awesome looking f150. Now I don't know what to do. I told the dealer why not just get me a new engine and he said he asked the service guys that and they laughed. However he is going to check on the price of that. I was told that I ran the truck without oil which is BS. I am not well versed in cam shaft, phasers and the like but I sure as hell know about oil. Then I was told by another individual it looked like some kind of metal got in there and grooved everything out. Funny my truck ran pretty damn good for having metal pieces ruin everything outside of the rough idle. I have been bent over and now I have been forced to bend over further for a bigger violation. Not sure if I should go to the hospital now.
So anyhow as long as you dont have a rough engine idle, and you dont like dealers, you should be able to get that job done for about 1500, my virgin uneducated guess.
TomR.. that really sucks, I think I would try to get it to another dealer for another opinion. There is no sense in a company having as much trouble out of motors as Ford has! If they don't change they'll lose a lot of customers.
I had this happen to my 04 scab. I was fortunate to have the work done under warranty. There is a technical service bulletin for this problem. I had ticking and knocking noises. TSB 05-15-8, get the dealer to look up this TSB. Also rough idle is TSB 05-5-15. Another TSB is 04-24-24 camshaft and lash adjuster. When my truck was giving me problems, i went to the dealer and told them about the engine noise. They did not believe me. So i printed the TSB and brought this to their attention. They had my truck for 3 days. I think the bill was 3000 canadian. Good thing i had warranty.
Apparently my warrant is 3 years or 36,000 miles. Ford must know that these gems are worth such a generous 36,000 mile warranty! Maybe I am lucky I got 36,000.00 x 2 before I had troubles but of course that means no warranty!!!
Very frustrated owner the really loves his truck but can't drive it!
