I was wondering how I can improve the acceleration on my 2005 Ford F150, on a budget. I am considering buying a Flowmaster or Borla muffler ( not going all out on dual exhaust yet ) and I think that it would be a great upgrade for the money. I am not sure what Flowmaster series to get, so if you know please inform me. If there are other/better options I should be looking at <$200, enlighten me! Thanks.
The absolute best thing that you can do is get a programmer like the EDGE. It will wake your ride up! I run mine on level 3 w Hi-test...it runs like a totally different vehicle...stronger shifts, much much better acceleration...it haus butt...
The only one I have experience with is the Edge Evolution Programmer. New, it costs ~$300, and a lot of the FTE site sponsors carry it. If you look around on this site you can find used Edge's that seem to vary in the asking price...$245 and higher. This amount of $ may be on the edge (no pun) of what your budget is at, but if you just type in "edge" or "parogrammer" in the search field on this site you'll find tons of testimonials as to what a good programmer will do for your acceleration and overall performance....its far and away the most bang for the buck. Exhaust and cold air add a little, but the Edge is the best.
I just put the edge in my 2005 FX4 and its like driving a whole new truck. Set on 2, what I like is that it got rid of the hesitation from the gas pedal.
If your going to spend money and expect a noticable difference, then exhaust is not the way to go. It might give you a 1/10th of a mpg, and 5-10hp and 10ish ft/lbs, but you couldn't feel it, and the hp would be at the upper rpms anyway.
A CAI or aftermarket air filter isn't going to help either, maybe slightly better hp-5ish, but nothing noticable.
I never tried a programmer, but if I had to spend the money, it would be either on the edge or a custom tuner.
Agreed exhaust in my honest opinion does nothing but help make it sound good look good and help the engine breathe better a programmer is the way to go
MBBFord: good answer, I've heard that exhaust didn't do a whole lot, but since everyone has it I thought it was the way to go. I thought you really had to dish out the cash on something like a supercharger to get a difference. This makes me happy
did someone say supercharger... =D No hijacking.. but i was wondering if it's worth buyin and edge now while i'm saving up for a supercharger? I mean i know with the supercharger you can't use the tunes but aren't the gagues a good enough reason?
Like said exhaust has no power gain nor gas mileage increase. If your looking at sound though I would definatly go with flow master. I have the super 40 and it sounds freaking awsome. It does have drone but I like the drone I wish it had more. I would also go with the edge. I would have one right now but I cant afford one at the moment.
