I have an 89 E350 service utility van with a 351/C6. Recently, I've noticed the characteristic "GRRRRRRRRRRRR" of the fan hitting the shroud, indicating probable motor mount problem. It happens when she's loaded heavily and I put a good bit of foot into it on take off.
Here's the question: Is this replacement a real PITA, or just a couple hours of grunt work? Any tips/tricks? This is a van, and when I replaced the engine about 10 years ago, it was a royal pain compared to a pickup truck engine r/r.
Motor mounts are a PITN to change on a van, I would look at the transmission mount first. Then I would look at the front (radiator) mounts as they tend to break down first being exposed to the most salt and weather so they tend to split.
Thanks for the reply. I took a closer look, and it seems that the fan is only hitting the radiator shroud at the bottom by a little bit. Engine barely rocks when reved while in gear at a stop. I was in there a while back to replace the fan clutch, and may have gotten things a little bit different than when they were firts done. Turns out the fan clutch is bad, so I need to go back into the whole radiator/shroud thing again......
