Yes but shake the harness while the meter is on it.

One of these would tell you within minutes whats wrong with the TFI system, if that really is where your problem is. It hooks up in series with the TFI and it will tell you all there is to know about the systems status.

That analyzer would be nice if just to prove one way or the other. One thing is for sure, with the spout out there is not the hint of a miss at any speed or throttle. Spout in and there's a whole lot of jerking going on!

You might also be able to see something if you hook up a timing light and watch what the timing is doing with the SPOUT connected. It would be nice to know if its the timing jumping around causing the problems or if it is something else. Also, have you tried pulling any codes from the computer? I think there's a code that will trigger if the SPOUT is removed/installed with the engine running, and if that code is set it would make a better case for an intermittent open circuit/broken wire.

The timing light/mark jumps around with the spout connected. Reconnect the spout and the light/mark is steady. Yes the CEL comes on when I pull the spout with the engine running but there are no codes set with the engine running by itself even though it's acting up. I tested the spout wire from the computer harness to the TFI. I was able to get some irregularity in the meter when I wiggled the mass or wires near the computer. Then I went in to eat dinner and I could not repeat the condition when I tried later. I'm going to replace the distributor under warranty. If that doesn't help I'll run a new wire from the spout shorting bar to the computer. I'll post the results.

I just peeled back the wire loom from the wires comming from the TFI connector. Several of the wires go through what looks like a shielded covering that looks like tin foil. There is a bare stranded wire that appeared in the mix going to nowhere.

Is this suppose to be connected to something at the TFI end?

No it can not be connected at both ends, it goes nowhere.
If you ground both ends then you will have problems.
It only gets grounded at one end, this along with the foil makes up the SHIELD.
Look at the above diagrams.

OK, it was grounded and one end at the driver side front fender. What does this shield do functionally. Is it possible that the spout wire could be itermittently shorting to the shield/bare wire? If, as a test, I ran a separate wire from the computer pin 36 to the TFI side of the shorting bar plug, would this cause any issue?

The shield wire keeps electromagnetic interference out of the timing signal that runs through the SPOUT wire. If you can get some shielded wire, I don't see why you couldn't splice it into the circuit in place of the existing shielded wire group. If there is a short in that bundle, running new wire would be a lot easier than pinpointing the problem area and trying to repair the wire in that bundle. If you unplug the TFI module, test for continuity between the SPOUT wire and ground as you wiggle the harness. If there's any intermittent continuity, you know that's the problem.

Update: I replaced the distributor and the jerking/bucking went away 90%. The temporary spout wire I put in from the computer harness to the TFI did not improve the situation so I reconnected the original spout wire. The truck is running amazingly well.

I have one other question. The only sensor I didn't replace was the vehical speed sensor on the manual trans. The sensor is original 185,000+ miles. Does the VSS have anything to do with the computer and the fuel metering at various speeds?
