It should be near the distributor - a two wire connector that looks the same as an injector connector, with a plastic plug in the open end. I don't have a picture of it to post, but maybe the description will help.
You should disconnect the spout connector before you start the truck when setting timing.
Why? If the timing is off it will be hard to start. The only possible downside to removing it after starting the motor is that a code is set.. and that's easy to clear.
It doesn't change the base timing. Removing the spout connector disables the timing advance from the ECU so that you can set the bast timing accurately. It won't be hard to start at all with the spout connector out.
Conanski, MisterCMK, thanks for the replies. I'm trying to reset my timing, I took the truck in for some brake work at a small local shop I've used for years...... old man who ran the place retired and gave his son the business.... son is an idiot....... truck ran out of gas (other tank full) son proceeded to change plugs, jack with timing, etc. I went by after a couple days to see why my truck wan't ready and he told me the truck started missing really bad and just quit...... I flipped the switch and changed tanks, truck started but doesn't have near the power it had when I took it in.... replaced the plugs, gap was fine, no help. thought I'd check timing next.
Make sure the "idiot son" mechanic didn't mess with the throttle stop screw on the TB. If that things been messed with, than all your other adjustments to timing will be wrong.
BTW, SPout connector should be removed prior to starting engine.
danr1, took spout out, hooked up my timing light and engine started as soon as I turned the key...... timing was set about 9 or 10 degrees, set it to 12 plugged the spout back, timing advanced as it should........ went for a short drive, it does much better..... still not quite right. Thanks..
