Its really not worth it to try to build it up, there is no support for such a project and it would be much simpler/cheaper/reliable to find a ZF that matches your engine

I swapped a ZF into my '87 F150 351W that had an automatic AOD transmission in it. Would do it a million times over again too. The ZF is a tough transmission, when I got mine from the junkyard (for $500) I took it to a trans shop just to have 'em check it and maybe replace a bearing here and there, and when they opened it up, about 2 gallons of water came out of it. With a lot of cleanup, still using the original gears and synchros (although the 2nd gear synch is headed out) and new bearings and brass bushings, I was good to go. Put 12,000 miles on it so far with no problems at all.
