I have an early 70's 460. I want a top loader but I have also heard that a ZF5 is a good choice. What I need to know is what years were the ZF5's that I need used? Also what flywheel would I need for either the ZF5 and the top loader? This is going in a 49 F1 so anybody that has experience with this install please let me know how you did it and what is required.
The ZF S-42 was used in the 87-97 F-250/350 trucks. You want the 460 version as they all have integral bell housings with a hydraulic clutch. 1st gear is low and 5th is overdrive. They are good strong transmission but they are also a truck transmission so it won't shift as fast as a car transmission.
I understand that the ZF transmissions are kinda slow shifting and big and the top loaders are expensive and getting hard to find. What about some of the Tremac or Richmond transmissions or some other manual transmission possibilities. My 460 will be pretty much stock. I don't care anything about having 900 hp and 1000 ft\lbs of torque so what are some of the other options?
I asked a similar question back in May over on the big block page. I was wanting to match my 70 Lincoln 429/460 to a late 90s ZF 5 speed. I learned that in 1979 the big blocks were changed to external balance. So if you go with a manual shift you'll want to match your flywheel to the engine. No doubt your engine came with a C6 automatic when new.
Another thing is the ZF trannys from the factory came with a dual mass flywheel. They work good but are terribly expensive (diesel flywheel is $1000) so if you did go this route I'd go with the aftermarket 1 piece setup which could be neutral balanced.
