smooth idle?????
I need help with my '76 460, 51,000 miles. I have new Holley 750, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, vacuum lines, pvc. I had the mix and rpm set by a pro, it runs great but I still have a rough idle. Haven't had the timing set and have a hard time finding anyone that works on a carb.
Any ideas???

Factory cam? if so definitely check your timing... if you werent going to do it yourself, it would at least be a good idea to make sure that was the problem first. loosen the bolt at the base of the distributor and then slowly turn it clockwise (this will advance it) and see if it smooths out. if advancing makes it worse, then just turn it counter-clockwise till it smooths out. with the factory compression and ignition curve, its pretty hard to screw up on ignition timing when going by ear. advance till it idles the highest and smoothest and then back it off just a tad. if ever you get "pinging" noises under load or sputtering at higher rpms when you arent giving it much gas, then back it off a bit till it stops.
