What kinda miles can you expect to get out of a 97 460? Im looking at F350s around that year and would like to know what I can expect out of the motors and the trucks themselves?
I tend to get 8-10 around town and while towing. I get slightly higher on the highway. That is my 97 F350 with 35" tires and 4.10 axle. I think I am actually getting a little better because the speedo has not been re calibrated for the larger tires, so I am actually going farther than what the speedo is saying.
Actually I was interested in the mileage the motor can go, I hear 200k isnt too much to ask?
I think you're getting worse than you think. Bigger tires make you go faster than the speedo says, so you're actually going more miles than the odometer is reading
i have 265/75/16 on my 1988 F250 460. and when i am going 53 i am actually going 60. performed this test by having my dad set cruise on the highway and i followed him
duh! excuse my rushed reply, hehe, I wasnt thinking fully:P I thought it through to the simple point and messed it up at the end, hehe. going faster than what the speedo shows means the odometer is less than actual miles and it would mean your really getting more miles out of the gas than it shows. hehe, Sorry for the confusion

I have an '87 (not '97) with about 250,000 undergoing a engine replacement soon. It is fully tired. But people ask, "how many miles are on it"?... to which I reply... "On which part?" The point I'm trying to make is your question has to be qualified by how much time and new parts your willing to put into it before you say "it's had it". When the water pump goes, are you going to say that's it?.
If your willing to keep up with regular maintainance using quality oil and regular changes, 500,000 is within reach. You might have to throw in a timing chain at 250,000 or so and maybe replace a tranny along the line depending on how much towing you do and weather or not you have an automatic. When the monthly repair bills look like they would be pretty close to monthly payments on a new truck and selling the truck might still get you close to a downpayment, then it's time to replace it. Otherwise, if you can keep the body together and the frame from rust, mileage is basically up to how much repairs you want to do on the truck. That's the way I see it anyhow. Longevity depends so much on the type of driving the truck see's also. Long haul 'hotshot' drivers put less stress on their trucks than dirt road farmers and construction trucks. In general, 300,000 shouldn't be out of range for any truck as I her tales of some powerstroke 'hotshot' drivers getting a million miles on their trucks.
I have a 1993 F-250 extended cab w/460 motor. I just hit 294,000 miles and the truck still runs good. It has been making some funny noises but doesn't sound like the motor. Have not done any motor work on it at all. Have put 2 tranny's in it though, proably because I use it to pull a 28' cabin cruiser. Truly FORD TOUGH MOTOR
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Mar-02 AT 10:12 PM (EST)]My '89's 460 blew 3 oil rings @ 296,000 miles. It was still getting 13/16 mpg but I had to stop every 250 miles to dump in a quart of oil.
The 460 is a pretty hard engine to kill but it can be done.
I've been told that the late-model EFI engines can last upwards of 150,000-200,000 without needing major repairs,if they are serviced on a routine basis.I've seen some with 250,000 on them that were still going strong....as long as you take the time to service it,it should give you many years of reliable service, and trouble free miles.I remember back in a late '93,or early '94 article on the EFI460,a Ford engineer basically summed it up this way: keep it from running hot,and change the oil at the recommended intervals, and it will last forever.I'll have to see if I can find that article.I think it was in one of the popular 4x4 magazines.

I have a 460 in my 78' Lincoln, it's at 243,000 miles and still runs good. As above it uses a quart of oil fairly often but still runs good. I did have to replace the stock water pump recently but that was because I redlined it for an extended period of time. If you keep decent oil in them 460 seem to last forever. (At least the past 24 years)
