-12 today and truck sat for 8 hours in the cold. went to start this afternoon and it didn't want to. finally did for about 30 seconds and idled really rough and then died. Did this about three times and now the batteries don't have enough power to crank anymore. It is at my work parking lot with no where to plug it in. What is the best procedure for me to get this thing started? Is there any special way to jump start with two batteries? Thanks for any help with this
Hook up the booster cable to either one of the batteries on the truck. Doesn't matter which one, they are connected in parallel so in effect they are just one big 12v battery.
Now on the vehicle that is boosting the truck, start the engine and let it run for a while to charge the truck's batteries back up.
Give it at least ten minutes. The booster cable's conductor wire is way to skinny to be able to carry the glow plug and starter load on that PSD without melting out. You need to get the truck's batteries charged back up enough to kick the engine on it's own.
30 seconds before you are ready to try the starter, take a big screwdriver and jump the two big posts on the glow plug relay. It's the rear one of the two that are mounted on the passenger side of the engine in the valley. Right in between the fuel filter and in front of the turbo, sort of. Brown plastic bodied with four wires going to it.
Jump the two fat ones with a hefty screwdriver and count to 30. Immediatly turn on the key and try and start it.
If that doesn't do it, then you'll most likely have to call a tow truck.
I had these issues last winter and replaced the standard GPR with Guzzle's Stancor GPR (link below). I've never had a problem since, even when I forget to plug my truck in at night.
Thanks for the replies guys. I actually have that GPR sitting in the garage, just haven't had time to install it. Maybe i should make some time so this doesn't happen again! I will try to jump it and see how it goes. Is that normal for it to idle really rough and rpms jump up and down and sound like a miss and a knock when it's -12 out? Thanks again for your help
Exactly -12 here today, let the GP's run their full cycle (I have an LED indicator wired in). Ran like crap and quit. Another 1.5 minutes on the GP's, it started like it was 15 deg. out.
Great tips - I'm going to try this out myself and see if it solves my cold start problem (no power on the GP post when ignition turned on is the symptom). The previous owner replaced these relays about every two years. Maybe the Stancor will fix it for good.
