Ideas for Exhaust before stacks

I know this is the powerstroke forum but i was hoping i could get some feedback from you guys. Ive got a 1993 Ford F250 7.3 IDI with NO turbo yet!

Well ive finally got everything i need to install my stacks except for a length of pipe to run from the engine to Y pipe for stacks.

Im still not sure how im going to do this so im hoping to get some feedback from you guys that already have stacks.

Ive decided that im going to ditch the muffler for sure. The y pipe for my stacks is 5 inch. So i was either going to cut out all of the old exhaust from the y off the manifolds and use a adapter to bring it up to 4 inches and then run a length of 4 inch pipe to the bed area then bring it up to 5 inches for the stacks y pipe.

...Or im just going to bring it up to 5 inch right after the y from manifolds and run a length of 5 inch pipe from the engine right into the stacks.

I just dont know what to do because i want it to still sound good and sound like a diesel truck. I would hate to get all the stacks installed...fire it up and take it for a drive and think wow this sounds like ****.

Ive heard the fact i dont have a turbo yet will make a huge difference.

Without the turbo it will rap loud like a gasser. Thats not bad but it can be an aquired taste. I would come right off the stock y-pipe and bump up to 4 inch back, 4 inch 90° up to the bed then bump it up to 5 inch to meet the y-pipe in the bed. The biggest reason I recommend 4 inch is cause 4 inch mufflers are easier to come by if its too loud for you.

I agree with the 4" run of pipe under the truck. I would make a Y off the manifolds and put a connector, then run the 4 inch back to the upright and weld in the 4-5 adapter (don't forget to use a section of flex pipe). With the connector at the Y, it will be easier to install a muff or resonator with out doing to much cutting.

Yeah my topper. It off now though so the stacks are coming back once they get rebuilt. Also Off topic but I figured you would like to know if you didn't already the early 99 intake y-pipes can be bought new again!!

Also as westtntruck said don't forget a piece of flex pipe! that is important.

My dad had a 91 7.3 IDI that he did 3 inch stacks on back in the day. He put cherry bomb turbo mufflers on it and it sounded good. I could still hear him take off from a corner 3/4 of a mile away but it wasn't too loud in the cab.

yea seeing as i dont have a turbo yet im just going to go 4 inch from the engine to bed and then into the 5 inch stacks. if it is too loud i can always add a muffler.

what if i left the stock exhaust right up to the back of the cab and then just went up to the 5 inch stacks. would it sound better that way or would it be pretty pointless performance wise?

like Tj said don ' t forget the flex pipe i did and broke a hanger right off the frame within 50 miles of putting them on I wasn ' t even thinking about it when I installed them! Lucky my welds held up to me romping on it right after I installed them (you know the break in test drive)LOL!

You could certainly do that with the stock exhuast. The gain in performance would be minimal anyway so I don't think you will hurt anything.
