Thanks to all the posts in here that answered my billion questions. I'm dropping a 460 into a 1970 f100 2wd. I just have one more question are l&l headers the only option for this swap?

thanks matt

I doubt that they are the only headers available, but they are in my opinion the best.

I am also convinced because of all that I have read around here, that L@L is the only way to go..You pay more but you get what you pay for..I will go that way when I start my 76 xlt..

Headman makes a set as well, be prepared to shell out $400 though(from summit). These are non coated, and made of 18ga. tubing, 3/8 mounting flange, 1/4" collectors... The L&L can be had for the same price (through Jeff's Bronco Graveyard), about $390 with shipping.
These are made with 14 gage tubing, 1/2" mouting flange, 3/8" collector flange, are nickel plated, and have a lifetime warranty against manf. defects and rust through. The headmans have a lifetime warranty against manf. defects only. Buyer beware though, JBG is SLOOOOW. I ordered my set back in December and am getting impateint(still waiting). Makes me wonder if I should have spent the extra $80 and bought direct from L&L eh?

Hi Lucky ---

I love my L&L headers --- I enjoy TWO benefits from them....

1) 30 seconds or less to get the starter out...
2) Wife can hear me coming down the road 2 miles away (or should I credit the 4'long thrush muffs for that?...)

I also use the L&L mounts and alt brackets --- everything works just like factory... (or better....)

Thanks,

I have a 68 F-100 2WD SWB that I just finished putting a 460 in. I didn't have the extra money to buy all of the L&L stuff, so I used brackets off of cars in junkyard, the motor mount kit for 65-79 2WD trucks out of P.A.W. catalog, and a set of Flowtech headers for a 74 1/2 ton 2WD. It all went together with no problems except for the passenger side header which comes down to sharply and hits the crossmember. I just took my die grinder and a small cut-off wheel and notched out my crossmember so they would fit. It beats paying $400 from L&L, the Flowtechs cost me $140 from Speedtek.

Trinogt ---

The L&L brackets allow the headers to be bolted to my heads....they be HUGE (thick)!!! The thicker they are, the less they will flex and warp. Keep in mind when using headers, you'll have more "underhood" temperatures as the thick iron manifolds that are normally on the engine are no longer there to carry the heat out from the exhaust ports.

Most of the comments I get when fellow rodders look under the hood are about the "beautiful" header flanges...they aint' cheap looking - it's quality stuff..

Hey, Lucky, I've got a set of L&Ls on my '96 F-250 460. I couldn't be happier with them. Very thick flanges where they bolt to the heads, good spark plug access, and they fit. There is plenty of clearance around the engine, starter and frame. It's obvious they didn't chintz on quality or design. My spplication is mostly towing and hard mountain driving and I am more than pleased with the seat of the pants increase in performance of my truck. About $200 less expensive than the Thorleys which are also an excellent brand. I don't have any recent experience with other brands (not since my 1970s Chevy SS-396 rodding days, anyway) so I can't comment on them.

Good luck with whatever you do!
