Unhappy Race ready?

I have a 92 f-350 2wd idi natural aspirated diesel with 4.11 gears. Im not looking for it to be a race car, but dont want to get whooped up by my buddies chevrolet. His truck is a 92 k1500 with a 350 and 3.42 gears and 33 12.50 bfg mud terrains. It is pretty slow. Any suggestions on what i can do to keep with him. I dont want to whoop him on top end i was thinking more like telephone pole to telephone pole.

First off, trucks are built for hauling, not racing. If you really want to whoop him proper, than attach a 10,000lb trailer to each truck and then see how things turn out.

But if you insist on racing, a turbo is the only thing that will make the big difference.

I know they are made for towing. Thats mostly what i use it for. It may be sluggish but it dont seem to slow down any with a load behind it. Im just about tired of listening to the trash talk. I did shut him up when i hooked a chain to him and showed him who was boss.

A turbo will level the playing field.
You weigh several thousand pounds more than he does.

Does the kind of turbo matter for power or is it all about the boost pressure? I mean it shouldn't matter as long as you are pushing the right boost right?

I'd go with the ATS kit they made the turbo setup for the factory turbo modles like mine, my big ole crew cab fourby will smoke stock 1500s all day.

Besides I'd rather push a ford than drive a chevy!

New turbo kits are in the $2000-$2500 range. Banks recently discontinued their turbo kit for the IDI diesel, but ATS and Hypermax both still offer one, with hypermax being non wastegated.

I got a used turbo kit for $200 complete minus crossover and downpipe and a few other small parts, usually $500 is more common, but there are other deals to be had. Best bet is to go with a kit, and not try to make one from scratch.

On a stock engine you are limited to less than 15 PSI boost.
But if you think for a minute, 15 pounds of pressure puts twice as much air in the cylinder.

A NA engine at sea level has 14 PSI air pressure minus any filter restriction trying to get in the cylinder.

The turbo is eliminating any filter restriction and putting an additional 15 PSI pressure on top of the 14 PSI at sea level.

I like my ATS which is wastegated, but there are others here that like their non wastegated turbo just fine.

Then again, my engine is not exactly stock, so I am running a bit more boost than most people.
