My Ranger makes noise coming from below the cabin. I think it is coming from transmission. Sound is similar to engine knock but louder and it is not coming from the engine.
Noise is persistant in idle or when moving. I have no problems shifting
I have:
1999 2x4 Ford ranger 3.0L FFV manual trans.

Does noise dissapeare when you depress clutch peadal when truck idling?
Try one more test. On empty road put tranny to neutral on run, turn the engine off and with clutch depressed try to shift up/down. If you hear noise, it is inside tranny.
Failed clutch may nock too....
If you'll be sure it is tranny drop it and put apart. How to do it I will tell you. Failed primary shaft, gears, bearings inside may nock. To order parts you should know, yo have M5OD-R1 tranny (light duty).
If this occurs only at idle, it may just be the normal idle speed variation is speeding up and slowing down the rpms, which can take up the slack in the gears and then release it. Try a few more rpm at idle. If it goes away then, most likely you can ignore it.
I am talking about a very slight rattle that comes and goes, FWIW.

He says the noise is there all the time, idle or speed. Throw out bearing, possibly, by it sounds more like a lose flywheel to me, or the front mainshaft bearing in the trans. If it is that loud, I would pull the trans and have a look. It will probably turn out to be something oddball. jd
Pablo-UA: Thanks! I will try your tests this weekend.
This happens both in idle and while moving. When idle it stays quite most of the time, but every now and then chirps for a second or so with that knocking sound. Sound is more persistant while moving.
On my 00 mustang gt it is really a pain to get to upper tranny bolts in order to drop the tranny. Is it bad on ranger?
I also have tranny noise,92 ranger,3.0,5 spd,,,had new clutch, pressure plate etc changed and still makes same noise, bled lines and replaced with new fluid....going nuts....
transmission was VERY low on oil. It is all it was.
When I bought the truck two months ago, I changed motor oil, but
didn't bother to look into transmission. Transmission oil is slowly leaking through the drive shaft seal I guess it leaked enough. Remaining oil was thick and black. Probably, It was not replaced for years.
