My friend has a 1991 ford ranger with the 2.3l, anyways when its running at an idle you can hear a weird sound coming from the bottom end, it kinda sounds like a rod knock but im not sure. If you took a marble and dropped it down a metal pipe thats what it sounds like. The sound will stop when you bring the rpms up to about 1500, when you let off the gas and it comes back down to an idle you wont hear it for about 10 sec then the sound will come back. The heat shield isn't making the noise, i can press the clutch lever in and out and that doesn't change a thing either.Do these engines have timming chain rattle issues. Thanks
How about a loose crankshaft pulley/damper? If they get loose, they sound kind of clonkey at lower rpms. And, it's down near the bottom of the engine. Take a look while the engine is running for endplay and runout. Try shaking it back and forth AND rotating it in both directions with the engine stopped. I have heard of the keyway in the pulley becoming too wide, allowing the pulley to move back and forth on other Ford engines. That will affect the indicated timing for distributor ignitions, and may affect the actual timing for EDIS engines (crank position sensor).

I hear a faint "knock" but only at idle with my 91. Of course it has almost 314,000 miles on it.... so I think its allowed to knock! Actually this sound sounds like it comes from the top end, but I quit looking for the noise. The truck is getting a fresh 2.3 soon anyways.
