I've got 2003 Ford Ranger automatic 2.3L XLT 50,800 miles and i'm getting a rev and then clunk from 2nd to 3rd gear. Took it to the trans shop who made me get a NEW valve boby and it still has the same problem. From what I'm reading sounds like it could be something else like solenoids or gears which would be much cheaper to fix. Anyway, do I commit to rebuild or new transmission or a second opinion?????
Thanks for your help, I have a genisys diag machine that I'm not too familiar with but will continue to play with. I'm now wondering if a recent over heating had anything to do with this? I recently changed the thermostat which didn't work, then had the radiator flushed and that solved the slight over heating problem.
I forgot that I had checked the trans fluid after the radiator episode and it was low so I put some fluid in it and realized later that it was merc III????? Thats when the clunking got worst. Anyway, with the neww valve body the fluid has been changed but do you think it could be a problem?
Your tranny is supposed to have Mercon V fluid. The wrong fluid could (and in most cases, will) make shifting harder. However, your tranny problem sounds like something other than hard shifts.
As you noted, there could be other mechanical causes, such as a bad EPC solenoid, for example.
