Sorry, I forgot to address the pushrod length. You're using the stock cam with one grind on the seats and hydraulic lifters, so stock length will probably work. If you go to a higher lift or longer exhaust duration cam, I'd suggest checking the rocker arm geometry and using a pushrod length checker. Especially if you use solid lifters. On serious engines, I've seen pushrod length vary for each cylinder. All the major manufacturers list their pushrods by length in an open stock listing for that very reason.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Jun-02 AT 07:49 PM (EST)]I had a chance to buy a set of heads, D0VE-C and C9VE-A. I didn't buy them because the book I have says that the C9VE has a different combustion chamber and different valves. Is this True or not?? Have seen conflicting information. Any help would be great! I am going by "How to rebuild Ford Engines" by Tom Monroe Thanks
don't forget everyone there is a STOCK rod casting number that is the same as the Cobra Jet rod!!! rectangular shaped bolt head different from the football rod bolt head from the c.j. and still uses the D0OE castings... C.J.
Monroe's book, an excellent reference for all but a few interchange numbers, is incorrect in this instance.
For all practical purposes, C9VE, DOVE and all other '68-71 385 series heads are identical.
Only '70/71 DOOE-R, made for CJ/SCJ/PI engines, had larger ports, larger valves and smaller combustion chambers. And you won't get those for the price of a C9VE.
My source book(High performance Ford engine parts interchange) says the C9VE-A has 2.09" Intake and 1.65" exhaust. Also lists the PI heads as 88cc chamber. I Wonder which source is correct?
Those are valve sizes for all 460 production heads other than CJ/SCJ/PI.
For '70/71, the PI engine was the CJ.
In '72 the CJ was dropped and the now separate identity PI head (D20E) had 88cc combustion chambers with slightly smaller valves and ports than the CJ but larger than the regular production head.
