I took my 06 PSD to the dealer because it quit running while driving. 3 weeks ago, the truck just quit running while driving down the road. I had around an 1/8 of a tank of fuel. Took it to the dealer, they said the PCM "lost" its memory. They reprogrammed it. I have driven it maybe 3 times since then. I have run 1 tank of fuel through it. The batteries have been low lately, because I hardly drive it. So Saturday morning I drove the truck to the store to get batteries. No problems. I drove to Home Depot, no problems. I drove it home. I had about 1/4 of a tank of fuel. I replaced the batteries. Started it up, it ran fine for about 30 seconds, then it acted like it defueled and died. Took it to the dealer. They say the fuel tank sender is bad along with 1 injector. They say the sender is causing the fuel system to function improperly and must be replaced. I am a mechanic by trade, but don't know much about 6.0's. How can the sender be causing fuel problems?????? I can understand the injector. My truck is past the bumper to bumper warranty, so of course the dealer stands to make $850 to replace the sender. I just don't buy it. Any advice?
The PCM monitors the fuel level by reading the sender. When it gets low enough the PCM makes the engine run like it is running out of fuel before it actually starts running out of fuel. This is supposed to make the driver think he is down to fumes and go to the next filling station before it really runs out of fuel and potentially cause damage.
Now they are telling me that they think the diaphragm in the sender is busted and is causing fuel aeration. Why all of the sudden like? I drove it all morning with no problems. This is a racket these dealers have going...
