On the 54, 279ci, ( fire truck )there is a governor attatched to a holly 2 bbl.. From the governor, there is a hydrolic line to the gov control at the pump panel.
crank controls a master cyl type to line.
What exactley does a gov. do. and how does it work, AND is it necessary to rebuild if I rebuild the carb. Carb is leaking a little. I also believe the electric fuel pump I have is putting to much presure out. Original manual calls for 4-5 lbs. The new ones typicaly out out aprox. 11 lbs.
A governor limits the speed of the engine. I assume there is a water pump connected to the engine. I would guess the governor was used to keep from over speeding the pump and creating too much water pressure while fighting a fire, but as I said I am guessing, I have not worked on a fire truck before.
Do you have a shop manual? The 54 shop manual should have information on the engine. I doubt you need the governor just to run the engine and drive the truck.
