You can still buy all the Mercon ATF that you could possibly want. No, It's not Ford's Brand, But it still meets the specs for Mercon/Dexron III transmission fluid.

I stand corrected. It was the reformulated Motorcraft Mercon V that I put in mine. My parts guy at the Dealer (a trusted friend for 15 years) advised me that it was completely compatable and better for my truck. Not experiencing any problems to date. I wonder how to tell if the stuff at Wal Mart is regular Mercon V or the reformulated that is supposed to be compatable with the old Mercon? I'll just keep getting it from my friend at the parts desk, he charges $3.50 / quart and that's comparable to the local stores.
i have used synthetic gear lube in every chain drive i have ever had. the chain in my transfer case is a hy-v sileent chai. every use of them in industry calls for synthetic gear lube. these ford engineers are idiots. atf has no business being in any chain drive.
Question does the transfer case fulid ever mix with the transmission fulid?
Its two different units right?
I was going to use Mobil-1 for the transfer case.

Yup, two different units.
I replaced my transfer case oil with Castrol Syntec Mercon about 3 years ago. It seems to engage and disengage a lot easier than the factory stuff. And I don't hear as much planetary gear noise in 4LOW, hardly any now.
I'd try the Mobil-1, based on what it did when I put it in the rear of my '01. When in 4x4 running at highway speeds, I'd get a slight gear hum from the rear - riding on the backside of the teeth with the front pulling. Switched to Royal Purple synth, some reduction in noise. Cover leaked, and I decided to try Mobil-1. Noise is GONE.
Decent stuff... but I won't run it in my engine ... personal reasons
