75-90 synthetic is a prefered lube for any chain drive. yuor transfer case will love it. i use 90-140 synthetic gear lube in the primary chain drive in my harley,,the chain loves it as much as the clutch does.
I just changed mine in a 04 and I used mercon 5 synthetic. Easy to do just make sure you have the correct funnel to refill it. ( i have several types but none would work thank god for the other car to run to the parts store for the correct funnel )

WOW STAY AWAY FROM MY T CASE! The T case requires the use of ATF not gear lube. Mercon/DexronIII is the correct oil for the T case. Also for the user that put Mercon V in their T case while it may not hurt it right away the additives in mercon V are tough on nickel plated parts like the chain pins. This is why Mercon is required. If you want to use Royal Purple products their Max ATF meets the Mercon spec and would be a good choice for the T case.

Mercon V is reformulated now and is used in place of Mercon. Ford stopped using Mercon about 1 1/2 years ago and you can't even buy it now. I just did my tranny and t-case 2 months ago is how I found out.
I can buy Mercon ATF fluid all day long at Wal-mart.
I'll check what's in my garage that I bought from the Ford dealer when I get home. (I had a couple of extra quarts) That's where I got my info from. Also, checked on google. Not sure what Wal Mart is selling, I didn't think they sold Motorcraft Transmission Fluid. I was trying to go back as close to what was speced in my owner's manual as possible. ON quick check, I just called that same dealer, he reitterated, Ford no longer has Mercon, only reformulated Mercon V. This reformulated Mercon V is for both Mercon and Mercon V uses. He said whater is at Walmart my be the old Mercon formula, but it is no longer being manufactured and hasn't been for over a year.

its funny how the transfer case in my 1980 3wd 350 psd ran so much cooler when i put the syn gear lube in it. same wiith the stick shift trans. same with my harley primary. my electronic snap-on temp meter tell me so. dont worry about me messing with your trnsfer case,,i just mess with my equipment. ill continue nto run gear lube in transmissions and chain drives because they are the lubes that these things need. not atf.leave that in slush boxes and power steering .
You can still buy all the Mercon ATF that you could possibly want. No, It's not Ford's Brand, But it still meets the specs for Mercon/Dexron III transmission fluid.

Do they include a 2.9:1 planetary gear for LOW? The transfer case in the '99-04 Superduty, at least, and I believe the newer ones, has a LOW gear setup that is similar to those in an automatic transmission.
While the rest of the transfer case might be OK with the gear lube, those planetary gears (and their thrust and bearing surfaces) are not going to be happy.
