I found a 69 429 engine for sale that looks like it has been sitting for a while. I know it's a 429 because I have already found the casting #'s on the heads and block. The whole engine is torn down to little parts. ie... bare block, crank, heads, valves, springs and so on. My biggest question is, is it worth tring to save this engine or am I better off looking for something else. The guy only want $350 for everythng. And by everything I mean the whole complete engine carb to oil pan. It's just torn down. I have looked at the crank but there is a very light coat of surface rust on the #3/7 rod bearing surface. I know the block and heads need a good honing/resurfacing as well. Any thoughts on this? I don't feel like driving 7 hours to buy this if it's not going to be worth it. Thanks.
Is it just a plain 429 not CJ, SCJ, or a PI. If its just a regular old 429 I would try to find 460 locally for about the same price or cheaper and just rebuild it.
In pieces or together, 99% of the time you're going to have to rebuild it. $350 is a decent price. Unless you need it right now and they're scarce where you live, seven hours is a long drive
The engine is in parts. But the amount of things he has already purchased new is making me want to by it. The intake, cam, and carb are almost worth it alone. I still have to call about machining prices though so that will be the determining factor. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg to recondition something if the negative out weigh the positive.
