hello i got me a '88 ranger 4x4 v6 5sp. with a mitsubishi fm146
its stuck in second gear and wont shift into anything else. i am totally stumped and dont know what to do..
If you remove your gearshift and boot, and look down the hole you should see three slots that the end of the stickshift rides in. The tracks on the left and right have small spring loaded buttons in them that have to be pushed outward to move them (the blue areas of the diagram I drew, below).
If one of the side rails is off-center (moved forward or back) you can't move anything else until it is recentered.
The diagram below is pretty much what it looks like in neutral - you need both buttons in the center, and you can move them with a big doggone screwdriver if your gearbox is not just plain frozen.
Look for the right side button to be slid forward, and try to get it back in the center.
- It will make a lot more sense when you see it at first hand.
Luck to ya! I just went through this with mine.

ya that might be part of the problem... the old stick that was in it had a bad bushing, so i went to the wrecking yard and got one out of a bronco 2 it was a little diff. i didnt think it was too diff. but maybe it is, because i do have a little issue getting into first gear sometimes...
