NP 435 stuck in second gear-help!
I have an 86 f150 4x4 300 6cyl. NP 435 & it is stuck in 2nd. I've removed the top of the trans. & have tried everything I could think of to get it free. Any Ideas? I was shifting to 3rd & the shift lever was like it was in neut. the only gear slot that worked was reverse, but then the truck would not move at all. I was able to get it out of reverse & drive it back home in 2nd. I would appreciate ANY help with this. thanks

Bringing this post back from the dead, but I have the exact same issue that the Original Poster of this thread has/had. NP435 Stuck in second, but could shift into reverese (did not drive in R, just would bind it up) Drove the truck home in 2nd that day...27mph 3200rpm. Glad i only work 10 miles from home.
From searching I'm thinking retaining cap on the shifter or nylon cap/bushing on one of the shift forks.
Planning on pulling the shifter and the top off tonight. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I need to get this thing going so I can start hauling firewood!

Pulled the shift lever out to align the ball box into an even row as suggested above. It already was so I then took off the top cover to investigate more. Trans is engaged in 2nd gear still. 1-2 Shift fork is missing the nylon bushings and had a lot of wear on it. Ordered a brand new 1-2 shift fork from ebay with nylon bushings on it. ($25 shipped ) I'll put it on later this week when it comes in the mail and let you know. Everything else looked nice inside the trans with no other signs wear. By the looks of the were on the fork the bushing had been off of there for a while. Just not enough metal left on the fork to grab the ring anymore I guess. Glad the fork is softer than the ring!

Clean out the debris in the bottom or it'll eat your bearings next...
Replacing the fork without replacing the slider will lead to fork failure again, however depending on how galled up the slider is dictates how long it will last.
This is a common problem with Arm Rester's! (Using the gear shifter for an arm rest), though it is not the only way it can happen.

I am an "arm rester". However, I don't really cruise around in 2nd that much. (Loud exhaust) Usually happens in 4th, but I'll try and stop that now I guess. Thanks for the tips!

Their should be a magnet in the btm of Np435 and pull it out and clean through pto door. kind of a pain to get out but possible. Now that shift fork is wore out. Never seen one that worn. That tranny is probably 35 yrs old or older if guessing but they are good tranny's, I have broke acouple before but extreme situations.
