ice fishing.....

so im completely new to this ice fishing thing. went out today for an hour or so and no luck, just out side of Traverse City, MI. ice was 3-4inches and another 4 inches of snow on top.
my questions are, what is the rule of thumb for safe ice thickness?
any perch and walleye catching tips?

Hard to tell; 3-4 inches is not always good if there is a current under it. Best bet is to wait for 6 inches of solid ice. Fall thru once and it is a memory you'll never forget.........

Buck1 is right. I fell through ice that was chest deep and its and experience I'll never forget. As I was running to the truck to take my clothes off to get warm my pants frooze up and it was like running without knees.

Oh the stupid things we do when we were young.

You can drive a vehicle of 4" of ice. Snow makes ice weaker though, because it insulates. its best to clear off a few feet around where you want to fish.

Walleyes bite best on small minnows or jigs, perch will usually bite anything.

3 to 4 is the minimum! Proceed with caution.
Get yourself a shiney rooster-tail spinner and jig it up and down for a while. No scent or bait required, You'll get sumtin for sure. When Ice fishing, it is good to learn when the fish are biting, where they are biting, and what the angler used. You'll figure out the pattern in a few days. I always stalk and talk when planning my trips. Go out and talk to all the other guys as they come and go. Most fisherman talk too much, a few won't want to talk. I would do that every day if you can, getting very familiar with a pond is important, as the fish are a bit sluggish, and you need to move near the fish.

Enjoy your ice-fishing while you can! It may become a fond memory in your old age. Ice-fishing doesn't happen in south-eastern Pennsylvania anymore. We are lucky if we get a week on the ice.

With 4 inches of snow there won't be much light getting through. Glow in the dark jigs will help. Fish more for the species that see better in low light. Crappies and Walleyes for example. Perch need more light.

All we ever used around here was live bait for ice fishing. We were allowed 5 tilts (tip-ups) per fishing licence. On the right day, right crowd, good fire going, cood chow, and plenty of beers, it is a great time.

The best way to tell if the ice is safe is when other ppl on out on it. esp with 4 wheelers/ snowmobiles.
