I am wondering which type of distributor would be best for the engine I am building.
The engine is a 429,CJ heads(with some exhaust porting),The cam I havent picked out yet but it will be big. This is going in a mud bogging truck,I am wanting to build it to run at w.o.t.
Will a mallory comp 9000 dist w/mechanical advance be the right type?Is it suitable for what I am going to do with it?
I've been running Mallory Comp 9000s w/mechanical advance for a long time with no problems. I did fry a couple of modules until I installed Mallory's spike protector.
I also run a stock Ford Distributor out of a 1974 460 with electronic ignition in my drag truck. I take out the vacuum advance and weld up the advance mechanicism. I do use the stock pickup to trigger a MSD 7AL with a timing computer. I run a tunnel ram intake and have no room for any dist with the big cap.:-( I haven't had any problems though and I turn 7600 rpm on every pass.
F100dw,
Just a suggetion...I ran a somewhat similar setup as you on a drag truck (3100 lb. Ranchero) with a 514 in engine, C-6 and 5,000 stall converter. I found I picked up more than a tenth and a half by changing from a 4.56 to a 4.11 gear. Your 4.86's may be a might steep to maximize your E.T.'s Deen
Deen, thanks for the tip. I've got the truck apart right now to update the cage and hopefully make it a little faster while it's down. There's not many people in Alabama who would race Ford, much less a truck. That's what makes it fun, I guess. I would like to know more about you combination on the Ranchero. I need all the speed tips I can get!!
