Anyone have chewed up ring gear problems????

I have heard from a few locals that when using a 390 flywheel in a 460 application, the starter tends to not mesh properly with the ring gear and cause early failure. Is this just a folklore or is there some truth behind this ???

You can't use a 390 flywheel on a 460. They are two totally different engine designs!!!

The ford 390 flywheel has beed used by many people on this forum in a 460 application. They both share the same crankshaft bolt pattern. As far as I know they are even the same part number as the 460 flywheels.

No problems with the ring gear. Txman you are very incorrect. Since I have done my swap I have seen a page out of a Hollander interchange book and the 460/390/360 all take the same replacment flywheel.

Anyone have chewed up ring gear problems????

I recently replaced my 460 flywheel/ring gear on my 76 460 with C6 auto. It was so chewed up it only had about 20 degrees worth of teeth left to start the truck with!
I also replaced the starter drive gear set, which cost me only 7 bucks extra. (it got chewed too!)
Check out trans pump seal and rear engine oil seal while you're in there... Good time to fix any leaks!

I was reffering to a manual transmission with the flywheel. But that is a good pointer for those with autos.

Oh, sorry! Yeah, never worked on a manual trans before. Every single vehicle I have had with manual, be it rear wheel drive sports car (300ZX turbo) or 95 F150 5 speed, I have never had to replace so much as a clutch before. So, I have nothing to offer there, except the rear seal inspection!

If you have a manual tranny, the start ring gear on the flywheel is replaceable without have to replace the complete flywheel.

Another old trick is to 'knock' the ring gear off the flywheel and flip it over and use the other side. To do this, you will need access to an oxy/act torch so you can heat/expand the ring gear some to press/slide it back on.

When you go to put the ring gear back on, rotate it some so the worne teeth aren't in the smae place they were when you took it off.

FYI....the starter engages the flywheel, manual or automatic, only in three places.
