Oil Pan question

Recently I bought a spare truck oil pan on E-bay (the one with the inspection plate). This one came from some guy in Canada. The inspection plate did not have any nuts to secure it to the pan, and I am having a heck of a time finding some that fit. The threads on the ispection plate are different from the ones I have on my truck now, and I'm baffled. Were the Canadian trucks that much diffrent? Tonight I went to a brand new Lowe's that just opened its doors last week ( you know before the hardware section becomes a disaster area) and I could't find a match. It seems to be 8 mm with a narrow thread, but nothing they had fit. Does anyone have any ideas???

Have you tried your local Fastenal store? They carry and can get you almost any and every nut/bolt/fastener ever made.

I would try them.

There is no listing on the Parts CD I have, in fact for some reason for 48/53 flat V8's they don't even show the pan having a clean-out?! They show one on the 6's but no listing for the nuts on them. I would wager they are 5/16"-UNF. They may be buggered from dragging the pan on the floor.

I just got back from the fastenal store, and I even stumped them. The threads are just fine, as a matter of fact I found one nut in my work bench junk can that fit's perfectly on all the bolts. According to the Fastenol guy, it seems to be a 5/16 nut with a 28 pitch. Normally you see 5/16-24. He didn't have any that fit, but I did find a nuts and bolts place on line that says they carry such a size. Its very weird.

Just saw a very heated argument about 5/16-28 fasteners on a vintage motorcycle site. Harley used to use them on knuckleheads.

Well my Canadian parts book lists it as just a standard 5 1/16 x 24 nut.

If you live by a large well-equipped hobby shop that has R/C airplanes, some engines use the 5/16 X 28 for holding the props on (prop nuts).

Just a suggestion...
