While my trans is out I tackled a few leaks on my engine. The main fix was the oil pan. Everything oil pan related was replaced with band new OEM parts, except for a moroso gasket which is NOT leaking yet Before I install the trans I wanted to run the motor to inspect for leaks, which I did last night at around 10:30. Well I have a leak and it's coming from the rear plate on the passenger side about 3/4 of an inch above the pan. The valley drain hole is dry eliminating the possibility of it coming from above. My 2 questions are:
Q1 will I have to replace the rear main seal if I remove this plate?
Q2 will I have to remove the oil pan?

The plate or cover I'm referring to is the large triangular shaped (sort of) sheet metal plate that covers nearly the entire rear of the motor.

If anyone is wondering, running the motor was accomplished by rolling the trans to the side of my truck partially underneath far enough to connect the wiring harness to the transmission. The truck will not start unless it thinks it is in park or neutral.
Thanks for your time guys (and gals). Any help is much appreciated.

Alright so I just looked over everything again with a mirror and flashlight. Everything up top in the valley is bone dry including the valley drain hole. It's for sure coming from the large plate just above the pan seem. I think the previous owner must have done some work to it because the sealant looks like the cheap RTV and looks a little deteriorated. I've always had a leak back there and just assumed it was the pan since the pan was leaking everywhere else.
Since the rear main seal isn't leaking I really don't want to pull this apart but I have no choice. Has anyone pulled this off? Any instructions on alignment for this thing before installing a new RMS? Or pulling the pan off to re-seal this cover?

Bump to get you up top. Never had this a part but I would say the rear seal is your problem.

I'm just gonna go for it. It's a weird place to be leaking oil. I'm picking up an OEM rear main seal in an hour and gonna take it apart tonight. I found out the plate that is leaking is the housing for the RMS. And I have no clue as to how or why its leaking at the outer edge.
