I had this posted in the exhaust section and although I received a excellent reponse from Willian in Atlanta. I was hopping for more debate and Info.So I will post it here to see if my fellow BB Fanatics can help
I plan on using a x pipe in my dual exhaust system. My Question is how critical is the placement of the x pipe I am familiar with h pipe placements and that closer to the headers is better, but I am unsure about the x pipe placement. The engine size is a 460 and pipe diameter is 2.5 Thanks in advance Eric
If you have duals now, the best way to determine the proper location is to paint the pipes, where ever the paint burns off first, the hottest point( not near the headers ) is where the exhaust is in need of a cross over of some kind. An H or X.
I think it would be commen sense that the closer you go towards the headers, the hotter the exhaust is going to be. Therefore, you put the X as close to the headersa as possible.
I am familier with the H pipe placement and why it goes there but with the X pipe the two pipes become one pipe for about 6-8", so I was wondering that perhaps the placment of the X pipe is not as critical or one could place it futher back and acheive the same affect. Eric
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Aug-02 AT 02:08 AM (EST)]That's why I said not too close to he header collectors.
Anyway, I would put it far enough back that you can remove the tranny pan ( if it is an auto ) so that you wont be cussing later. :-X11
How can you put in an 'H' or an 'X' when you have an aux. tank, and there is only room for this in the stock exhaust 'Y' location? Duals have to run up alongside the driveshaft on passenger side...

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
you can't. Plus when you have to run them both down the same side, you have 2 different lenghth pipes so your backpressure will be a bit unbalanced from the extra bends in the longer pipe.
